Who wouldn’t want a grand vacation driving across the country? Your near future may include a long distance excursion, whether its all by yourself or with family or friends. Many people simply just jump in their cars and go, with very little or no planning. But planning before you set forth can definitely lead to a more enjoyable trip. Following are some ideas to help get you ready for all the things that could happen on the road.

Don’t let anything happen with your car on the way, by having all of the maintenance up to date. Make sure your oil has been just recently changed, and check your tires and battery. Plan your journey out so you don’t have to worry about getting lost or winding up somewhere you had no intention of visiting. Scheduling your over night stops and checking for road construction issues can help a lot, too. You need to have roadmaps of any places that you plan to go off road and explore. If you know what your location is and where you’re headed, you’ll make much better decisions every step of the way. And stay alert – nearly all accidents originate from inattentive drivers. It’s possible to have a terrific time and a wonderful trip if you’ve planned adequately and stay focused when driving.

Talking on a cell phone at the inappropriate time is not good, but it will be a lifesaver, if anything ever happens, such as an accident. Check to make sure it’s charged up and accessible, but no chatting while driving. You’ll need a cell phone in case there is trouble, but they’re also a major cause of accidents. And make sure you buckle up – most states mandate this, but seatbelts are a good idea regardless. Car or truck thieves usually are keeping an eye out for vacationers, so take precautions. Be sure you also have a tracking system and a steering wheel lock, as well as fuel and ignition system locks – criminals hate these things.

In the event you get involved in a crash, consider taking whatever steps are needed to protect yourself and your passengers. Try to move your automobile out from traffic, and be sure and turn it off to keep it from overheating and catching fire. Also be sure and attempt to warn oncoming traffic and, finally, be sure and phone your insurance company on the spot. If your insurance is not paid up and current, never even leave home.

Additionally, it is extremely important that all your insurance papers actually be with you in your car. No one goes on a trip expecting to be in an accident, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be prepared just in case.
